Women's Enews Goes Independent

As of Jan. 1, Women's Enews will be an independent news agency and no longer a project of NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. In June 2000, NOW Legal Defense created Women's Enews to be a resource for the media and a benefit for all women.

NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS)--Women's Enews succeeded. We built an audience from less than 1,000 subscribers on launch to more than 5,000 today and from a handful of visitors to our Web site to more than 70,000 visitors and more than a million hits each month. In addition, our news has been widely tapped by other media from coast to coast and around the globe.

Women's Enews has won three awards this year: Newswomen's Club of New York prize for best public service feature--Internet; the University of Michigan Award for coverage of gender and the Women in Periodical Publishing certificate of excellence.

In the past 18 months, Women's Enews proved we know how to cover the news and we proved there is an audience hungry for the news we cover.

All this from an idea germinated in 1996 at a roundtable discussion hosted by NOW Legal Defense and funded by the Barbara Fish Lee Family Foundation. Market research was completed, a business plan written and the fund took the leap in September 1999 to begin the work required to create Women's Enews.

And now we are ready to go out on our own.

We hope you will show your support by contributing financially to our Independence Campaign. Please go to our Web site, http://www.womensenews.org/support.cfm and follow the instructions. Any gift you give will not only help us, but also will be multiplied when we are able to demonstrate to foundations and private donors that our readers support us in the way that can be easily counted.

Also, there will be a short interruption of your Women's Enews service from Dec. 23 to Dec. 29 while we move our operations. (Our email addresses and Web addresses will remain the same, even though we are moving to new offices.)

We will be back in your electronic inbox and our Web site will have fresh stories by Dec. 30 and Dec. 31. We will end the year with our two final profiles of Women Rebuilding New York. And on Jan. 1, Women's Enews will announce its 21 Leaders for the 21st Century.

Best wishes to all our readers for a good news New Year.
